Newcastle United injury update as Eddie Howe names two players who are not fit to face Everton on Saturday

Eddie Howe has provided an update on Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson ahead of Newcastle United’s game against Everton.

The Magpies have been without Callum Wilson all season due to a back and hamstring issue, while Alexander Isak has recently joined him on the injury list.

The 25-year-old suffered a broken toe during Newcastle United‘s win over Wolves, but was able to play through the pain for most of the defeat to Fulham. However, he has since missed the Magpies’ games against Manchester City and Wimbledon.

Isak has also not been included in the Sweden squad for the upcoming international break. That suggested that he will not be available for Newcastle’s game against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday evening.

Eddie Howe has now confirmed exactly that during an interview on Sky Sports News on Friday morning, while he also provided an update on Callum Wilson.

“He [Isak] won’t make the game tomorrow,” he said.

“We hope he will be back after the international break, and we hope the same with Callum [Wilson].

“Potentially good news around the corner with those two. They’re such important players for us.”

Newcastle United could have strikers back to face Brighton

As expected, Isak and Wilson are going to miss Newcastle’s game against Everton on Saturday. That is not a major surprise, as there was never any hint of Wilson being available. Meanwhile, it had been heavily hinted that Isak would miss the trip to Goodison Park.

But Howe is hopeful that both of his star strikers will be available after the international break, with Newcastle set to face Brighton at home in their first game back.

That will be a major boost, as it has been rare that Howe has been able to rely on both of his forwards over the past 12 months.

They dovetailed excellently as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League, but it rarely happened last season. There were only 18 games during the 2023/24 campaign when both Isak and Wilson were in the matchday squad.

Anthony Gordon up front against Everton

With Isak and Wilson ruled out, it will be Anthony Gordon up front against his former club.

He played as a striker during the draw with Manchester City, and will hope to do just as well against Everton.

Gordon’s performance last week was a return to form, after a difficult start to the season in a black and white shirt. Howe held talks with Gordon about his performances after the Fulham defeat, and that conversation appears to have inspired the 23-year-old to get back to his best.

He will have added motivation to perform on Saturday evening, after a less than harmonious Everton exit in January 2023.

Elsewhere, it looks like Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier will be fit to face Everton after they missed the Wimbledon game. They have been spotted in training this week.
