The January transfer window is fast approaching and Newcastle United continue to be linked with a number of players.

Indeed, Newcastle are reportedly in the hunt for new additions as Eddie Howe continues to build a squad capable of challenging across a number of fronts.

One of those is Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.

The England international has struggled for game time since a £42m move to the Premier League champions from Leeds in the summer of 2022.

As a result, the Magpies have been credited with an interest, with a new midfielder thought to be on the agenda.

Indeed, the pundit believes the 27-year-old should be looking to leave the Etihad Stadium as soon as possible when the window reopens in January and has urged his agents into action.

“His agents should stop spending all their energy trying to recruit Ivan Toney for their next fee opportunity and instead get Phillips to ply his trade somewhere more befitting of his talents, somewhere he might actually be wanted and where he would have a chance of getting in the team,” he wrote in The Daily Mail.

“Perhaps they are too busy battling against FIFA’s long overdue crackdown on agents to worry about their actual clients.”

Phillips is wasting his talent at Manchester City

Hailed as “phenomenal” for his ability by Newcastle’s own Kieran Trippier, Phillips is wasting his talent by warming the bench at City.

Dubbed the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ for his performances at Euro 2020, it’s sad to see at times.

For Newcastle, a move would make sense. Though Bruno Guimaraes is back to something approaching his best, even those at the club are believed to know his optimal position is not as a No.6.

Sandro Tonali, meanwhile, has been playing in a more box-to-box role under Howe.

With that in mind, looking to sign a traditional defensive midfielder already proven in the Premier League and perhaps with a point to prove would be a logical move for Newcastle.
