Newcastle could still be tempted to sign another type of midfielder

This summer allowed Newcastle United to finally address their lack of options in midfield.

Such has been the need to focus on other areas since the takeover, Newcastle had signed only one midfielder in the PIF era.

Granted, that player was Bruno Guimaraes, who has had a transformative impact at St James’ Park.

Still, and admittedly Joelinton’s rebirth as an option there has helped, it was not until Sandro Tonali’s arrival in July that Newcastle strengthened further.

Clearly, there have been some teething problems. Guimaraes has not been at his best, while Tonali was criticised for elements of his performance against Brighton.

Indeed, as such, it seems Newcastle could be looking for another option there.

Ben Jacobs says Newcastle may still be looking to sign a defensive midfielder

With neither Guimaraes or Tonali looking particularly defensive, journalist Ben Jacobs has hinted the club could look to bring in a more traditional No.6 amid links with a move for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.

“Kalvin Phillips has always said that he wants to stay and fight for his place at Manchester City,” Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT.

“That’s the first thing to point out. Had he said any differently, I think we would have seen some summer suitors.

“Newcastle obviously brought in Tonali for big money as well, and Phillips will not have a cheap price tag despite the fact he hasn’t played that regularly for Manchester City. Tonali is not quite Kalvin Phillips.

“He’s a sort of hybrid between a No.6 and a No.8, so Newcastle may see a desire to bring in a more defensive-minded midfielder.”

Still hope Tonali, Guimaraes and Joelinton can work

Though surely few supporters would turn their noses up at the idea of signing a player like Phillips, it seems Newcastle still have hope Tonali, Guimaraes and Joelinton can work as a three.

There is said to be a confidence behind the scenes the trio will be able to slide into place despite a reasonably rocky start.

At home to Brentford after the international break, Howe must hope that really is the case.
