Premier League told PSR rule is wrongly stopping Newcastle United

Newcastle United are in the Carabao Cup final and challenging to qualify for the Champions League, but fans are still frustrated.

That is the view of pundit Paul Robinson, who has spoken about the financial situation at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United have not made a major signing during the previous three transfer windows. PSR has limited the Magpies’ ability to invest, while there has been constant talk about Newcastle needing to sell one of their major stars.

That has not happened yet, and Newcastle expect to keep their star players this summer – whether they qualify for the Champions League or not.

Sympathy for Newcastle United’s PSR woes

While that is positive, what Newcastle United need is more depth. Eddie Howe needs a stronger squad, and former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson has suggested that it is not fair that the Magpies are unable to spend their owners’ riches.

Robinson spoke about the Newcastle United squad on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night club, admitting that Toon fans must be frustrated about the financial rules that are holding the club back.

“It must be so frustrating for Newcastle fans with this FFP and PSR rule,” he said.

“You’re the richest club in the world, and every transfer window the story is ‘they’re going to have to sell Isak, they’re going to have to sell Guimaraes’.

“They should be going and being allowed to spend what other clubs have spent over the years.

“How are they going to close that gap quickly? They’re not. They’re going to balance the books, they’re going to have to rejig the squad.

“The squad that Eddie Howe wants is probably three or four windows away. But the club are financially able to go and do it now, but they just can’t.”

Newcastle United ready to strengthen this summer

Robinson is right – Newcastle United fans are frustrated about the inability to invest.

While football should not be about which club can spend the most money, the fact that there are rules in place to specifically hold the Magpies back is infuriating.

And with PSR set to remain in the Premier League for at least another year, Newcastle must continue to operate within these rules.

However, Newcastle’s PSR position has been boosted. The departures of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly have put the Magpies in a better position, and that will allow them to invest in the summer.

Newcastle do not have a limitless transfer budget, but they are probably going to be in a better position than they have been for years.

That will be music to the ears of Eddie Howe, who desperately needs reinforcements. It is reported that Newcastle want three signings, while it has already been claimed that James Trafford will join the club this summer.
