Martin Dubravka’s Newcastle United future could take interesting twist despite just signing a new deal

Newcastle United are planning to sign James Trafford from Burnley this summer.

That was the plan last summer, with Newcastle United agreeing personal terms with James Trafford. However, a deal collapsed when the Magpies’ PSR issues became apparent and Odysseas Vlachodimos had to arrive to satisfy Elliot Anderson’s exit.

But Newcastle’s interest in Trafford has remained, and he is seemingly on course to join Eddie Howe’s side when the summer transfer window opens.

James Trafford transfer could lead to Newcastle United exit

That is according to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, who has spoken about the Magpies’ plan to sign Trafford on his YouTube channel.

Newcastle fans think Nick Pope could leave if Trafford does arrive, but Hope has suggested that another Toon goalkeeper’s future is far from certain.

Martin Dubravka has just signed a new contract, but that does not mean he is going to stay beyond the summer,” he said.

“My information is there is real confidence now that that one [James Trafford to Newcastle United] does happen.”

Newcastle United set to change goalkeeper department

Right now, Newcastle have five senior goalkeepers. That looks set to become six with Trafford, which is far too many.

Someone will go in the summer, but who that is remains to be seen. Nick Pope would fetch the biggest fee, but that would perhaps be a risk. Trafford is a future number one, but to take that role from next season might be too big an ask. Meanwhile, Martin Dubravka feels more like a backup nowadays, despite being in the midst of a run in the starting XI.

Dubravka has signed a new contract, but Hope stresses that he is not necessarily staying at St James’ Park. The 36-year-old could still leave in the summer, and you would like to think he would have plenty of suitors given his recent form for the Magpies.

Newcastle United plotting early summer deals

With Trafford expected to arrive at St James’ Park, Newcastle United officials are already putting in a lot of effort towards the summer transfer window.

As well as Trafford, Newcastle are set to sign Antonio Cordero. The 18-year-old Spaniard is keen to join the Magpies when his contract at Malaga expires at the end of the season.

Hope stated on his YouTube channel that a deal is still set to go through.

“We’re still expecting Antonio Cordero from Malaga to come in as well,” he said.

On top of that, Newcastle will sign Vakhtang Salia in August when he turns 18. The exciting Georgian attacker is one for the future, like Cordero, as Paul Mitchell aims to bolster the Magpies’ youth ranks.
