Newcastle United will most likely need to replace Callum Wilson in 2025.

The striker’s Newcastle United future is unclear at this stage, with Callum Wilson in the final year of his contract.

However, Newcastle can extend Wilson’s contract by a year. But that may only be done if the club feel they can sell the striker for a fee during the summer transfer window.

Given all of his injury issues and Newcastle’s need to evolve, it feels like we are in the final six months of Callum Wilson’s Toon career.

If Wilson does leave, Paul Mitchell will need to sign a striker to replace him.

That will be challenging, but TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a contender to arrive on a free transfer.

That may depend on his Everton future, with new Toffees boss David Moyes keen to keep the 27-year-old who is out of contract this summer.

“Calvert-Lewin is very much in Newcastle’s thinking as the man to replace Callum Wilson,” he said.

“David Moyes is a little bit convinced that he can be persuaded to stay. Moving into the new stadium with David Moyes, who might be able to get a tune out of him. Everton going to that new stadium with new owners and Moyes in charge are a very different proposition.

“Eddie Howe likes Calvert-Lewin an awful lot.”

Calvert-Lewin is ideal to replace Callum Wilson at Newcastle United

Replacing Callum Wilson is not easy. You are effectively signing a player who knows they will be a backup as long as Alexander Isak is at the club.

As long as Isak is at St James’ Park, the Magpies are not going to sign a striker like Benjamin Sesko or Jonathan David. While Newcastle United may admire them, deals for players of that calibre simply would not make sense.

In contrast, Calvert-Lewin is a good fit. While he has endured a few tough years at Goodison Park, he has previously been a reliable goalscorer in the Premier League. For him, it would be a chance to join a club that is on the up and potentially compete in Europe.

The fact it would be a free transfer is also appealing, as it means Newcastle United would have more money to spend elsewhere on players who enhance Eddie Howe’s starting XI.

Newcastle are long-term admirers of Calvert-Lewin, and almost signed him in the summer of 2024. With his contract situation unresolved, Newcastle will continue to be linked as we head towards the summer of 2025.

It might not be a popular signing, but it could be a sensible one.
