‘Longer’… Newcastle player admits he could be out for several weeks with injury now

Newcastle United are looking to sign a striker during the January transfer window, with Callum Wilson currently struggling for fitness.

The Magpies have asked Bournemouth about signing Dominic Solanke, who is a player that Eddie Howe knows well from his time at the Vitality Stadium.

Interest in Solanke comes at a time when Newcastle have only one fit senior striker. Alexander Isak is leading the line on his own, and boasts an impressive record of four goals in his last three appearances.

The Sweden international has looked excellent since returning to fitness, and it has coincided with Callum Wilson picking up another issue.

The 31-year-old has missed Newcastle’s previous two games, and is set to be unavailable for Saturday’s clash with Manchester City. It has been reported that he could return for the FA Cup contest against Fulham at the end of the month, but that remains to be seen.

Losing Wilson to yet another injury is a massive blow, and now the Toon number nine has opened up about his latest setback.

Callum Wilson talks about his latest injury

Wilson has appeared on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast, and admitted that he probably returned from his last injury too soon. The striker added that he might have to be more careful this time, as he has ambitions of going to the Euros with England in the summer.

“I came back in good shape and I also push things as much as I can push them to make myself available to the team and it’s been coming to the detriment of myself,” he said.

“The last two injuries I have had I have got injured again just after in quick succession because I probably need more time.”

Wilson added: “It could be a few weeks before I decide I’m fit again or it could be a little bit longer!”

Wilson put his body on the line for Newcastle

A lot was asked of Wilson before Christmas. He had missed five games with a hamstring problem, then returned during the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

After that, Wilson played every minute for the next four games, including high pressure fixtures in the Champions League and the Carabao Cup. He had to, as Isak was injured himself.

Newcastle’s squad was so stretched that players were having to play more than they should, which is what has resulted in Wilson hurting himself again. He put his body on the line for the club and now he is paying the price.

It is unclear when Wilson will be back, but he must not rush. That could only end up hindering him further.

As long as Isak is fit and firing, Wilson can take his time. That hopefully will be the case, as the less intense fixture schedule should ensure that Isak avoids another injury.
