Newcastle United plans shared for Alfie Harrison and Garang Kuol next season

Newcastle United have a big decision to make regarding the futures of two top academy talents this summer, including Australian wonderkid Garang Kuol.

The 20-year-old did not get off to the best of starts after making the move to Tyneside in 2023.

A failed loan spell at Hearts in his first six months preceded relegation with Dutch side FC Volendam, where he made just a handful of appearances.

Garang Kuol was injured last summer, meaning he was not able to make a third successive loan move. However, that looks to have been a blessing in disguise as he has played much more for Newcastle United’s under-21s.

In the Premier League 2 campaign, Kuol registered an impressive nine goal involvements in 10 appearances, helping the young Magpies reach the PL2 play-offs.

While appearances have been promising, Kuol has hinted that he could leave Newcastle this summer to play more first-team football.

With his future up in the air, a journalist has suggested what could happen with Kuol this summer and another young talent who has impressed Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

Newcastle United to make Alfie Harrison and Garang Kuol decisions

Alfie Harrison joined Newcastle in January 2024 from Manchester City for a fee of £3.5m, and fans understandably bought into the hype.

After a promising start, Harrison trained with Newcastle’s first team towards the end of the 2023/24 campaign, but has yet to make his first-team debut.

There was the suggestion that Harrison would leave Newcastle on loan in 2024, but a move never materialised. With the 2025 summer transfer window set to open, Chris Waugh of The Athletic has claimed that the 19-year-old is ‘likely’ to go on loan next season.

Waugh believes that Harrison will struggle to find his way into Howe’s set-up due to being best suited to playing as a No. 10, which Howe does not use.

While Kuol has impressed, there are still question marks over his future. Waugh states that he could be sold due to being in the last year of his contract, but there is ‘a chance’ his contract is extended and he is sent out on loan.

Newcastle United must not repeat Garang Kuol failure with Antonio Cordero

With a busy transfer window approaching, Newcastle are believed to have completed the signing of Antonio Cordero.

The Spanish winger has had a bright season with Segunda Division side Malaga, earning him the move to Tyneside.

While there is excitement over what he will achieve with the Magpies, he is set to spend his first season on loan. Cordero is expected to join Ajax on loan from Newcastle, a similar move made when Yankuba Minteh first joined.

Fans will hope that Cordero’s move to Holland will be as much of a success as Minteh’s was, and as little of a failure as Kuol’s.

With Cordero’s move set to be announced in the near future, Paul Mitchell and loan manager Shola Ameobi must make the right decision for his development.
