Garang Kuol is in an interesting position at Newcastle United.
Kuol is yet to have made a competitive appearance for Newcastle United since joining the club from Central Coast Mariners in 2023.
The 20-year-old has struggled while out on loan too, failing to make much impact at either Scottish side Hearts or Dutch outfit FC Volendam. However, the Australia international has been in fine form for Newcastle United’s Under-21 team this season.
Kuol has been impressive in Premier League 2, scoring five goals while registering four assists in 12 appearances across all competitions thus far.
With first-team chances limited right now, Kuol has hinted he could leave Newcastle this summer. Now, the Australia manager has told him to do exactly that.

Australia manager tells Garang Kuol to leave Newcastle United
Speaking during a press conference, Socceroos manager Tony Popovic has told Kuol to leave Newcastle this summer in pursuit of first-team football.
He suggests that while it’s promising to see the winger do well for the U21s, that level can be “deceiving” and that it’s important to see how Kuol operates in a senior side.

“We’re monitoring him,” he said.
“We’ve seen some of his games that have been visible recently in the Under 21s. He just needs consistent football.”
“The level can sometimes be deceiving, of course. But for any striker, when they’re scoring, they’re confident.
Popovic added that he was keeping an eye on the player’s progress and was pleased with his development but admitted he was keen to see him step up a level.
“Hopefully this will help him get a move somewhere where he will then have the challenge of getting into a team where there’s points on the line and there’s constant pressure.”
Garang Kuol reacts as Newcastle United coaching staff make demand
Back in February, the Newcastle coaching staff told Kuol to impress Eddie Howe after he remained at the club rather than heading out on loan.
It would be fair to say he’s reacted. Indeed, Kuol was nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Month Award in April, having scored two goals while registering two assists in as many games.
Whether that’s enough to tempt Howe into handing Kuol more of a role next season remains to be seen.
If it isn’t, Kuol would be wise to follow Popovic’s advice…
