Sean Longstaff is one of several Newcastle United players who have been linked with a January exit.

Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules continue to make life difficult for Newcastle United and the recruitment team at St James’ Park.

Newcastle want to sign a right winger and could revisit a deal for Marc Guehi after missing out on him in January, but any incomings will rely on sales being made.

Miguel Almiron continues to be linked with an exit in January after he almost left Tyneside in the summer, while Callum Wilson’s latest injury blow has dented the chance of him being sold next month.

Newcastle desperately want to avoid having to sell a star player in 2025 but that means other fringe players may have to head for the exit, including Sean Longstaff.

Newcastle United extend Sean Longstaff’s contract

Longstaff’s contract was set to expire in 2025, which is one of the main reasons his Newcastle future has been called into question.

As an academy player, his sale would provide pure profit to the accounts so Newcastle will not want to lose the 27-year-old as a free agent in the summer.

Back in October, reports claimed Newcastle chiefs wanted to trigger Longstaff’s extension which would add an extra 12 months onto his current deal to protect his value from dropping.

Craig Hope has now revealed via the Daily Mail that Newcastle have invoked a one-year extension on Longstaff’s contract, meaning it is now valid until 2026.

Sean Longstaff is open to shock Newcastle exit

Amid rumours of an exit in January, reports suggest Longstaff is open to an MLS move that would see him reunited with his brother Matty Longstaff.

While he is not desperate to leave St James’ Park, Longstaff is open to a move to another Premier League side or a move Stateside.

There has been no formal interest in Longstaff so far, but with the January window opening on Wednesday that could change quickly.

The report above claims Leicester City, Wolves and Everton are all aware of Longstaff’s availability heading into January.

Eddie Howe insists central midfield is Newcastle’s strongest position, with youngster Lewis Miley currently trying to work his way back into the first-team plans. Longstaff is surplus to requirements and his sale would free up funds to invest elsewhere.
