What Marc Guehi is now prepared to do in January amid Newcastle United and Liverpool interest

Newcastle United may regret walking away from Marc Guehi in the summer transfer window.

The summer ended up being an underwhelming window for Newcastle United after newly-appointed sporting director Paul Mitchell failed to land his top targets.

Newcastle pulled out of a deal for Marc Guehi after submitting several bids for the Crystal Palace star. Ultimately, the London outfit wanted north of £65million for him.

A centre-back was a top priority for Newcastle and that remains the case heading into 2025 after Mitchell failed to address that area in the summer.

Newcastle remain interested in Guehi ahead of the January window but now face competition from other sides, including Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Marc Guehi would prefer to join Liverpool over Newcastle

Over the summer, Guehi was ‘keen’ to join Newcastle if a fee was agreed between the two clubs. Sadly, it wasn’t.

Now, reports suggest Liverpool are readying a bid for Guehi as Arne Slot looks to improve his defensive options.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Liverpool is Marc Guehi’s first choice destination and the Palace star is now willing to wait to get a deal over the line with the Reds.

Palace are braced for offers over January but Liverpool want to make sure they do the deal at the right price. If Liverpool hesitate over meeting Palace’s fee, it could open the door for Newcastle to jump ahead but Guehi prefers a move to Anfield.

Other defenders Newcastle United could sign in January

With Sven Botman returning to training and Jamaal Lascelles expected back in early 2025, Newcastle’s need for a new centre-back has diminished slightly.

However, it is still an area that could be improved and there are plenty of other centre-backs on Newcastle’s radar.

Newcastle have been linked to Antonio Silva who is valued at £41m by Benfica ahead of January.

Reports also suggest Newcastle are in pole position to sign Fikayo Tomori and bring him back to the Premier League. Even if Newcastle miss out on Guehi, they have cheaper options they could pursue next month.
