It’s a time for change at Newcastle United and one particular player looks to be in the firing line.

Several players have been linked with an exit from Newcastle in January as they look to tackle their ongoing PSR problems.

The summer saw Newcastle sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to avoid a points deduction much to the dismay of Toon boss Eddie Howe who never got to see the latter play for his side.

Midfielder Sean Longstaff is among those linked with a move away which would end his 21-year stint at the club.

The 27-year-old missed Newcastle’s win against Brentford but came off the bench in the Magpies win at Ipswich Town on Saturday.

As talk of an exit looms, here is the latest update on Longstaff’s Newcastle future.

Sean Longstaff’s future likely to be away from Newcastle

Newcastle are in a position with PSR where they must look at what options they have and who would generate the most profit. Longstaff fits the bill in this case by being a product of the academy, it means that if he was sold Newcastle would get pure profit.

According to Chris Waugh of the Athletic, Longstaff is the most likely of players linked with an exit to leave in January.

The club exercised the option to extend Longstaff’s contract until the summer of 2026 but reports suggest that is to keep his value up.

He wants regular first-team football and with Howe opting to play a starting midfield of Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes with Joe Willock as backup his chances of being a regular starter look to be slim.

Waugh also says that Newcastle are likely to want a more technical midfielder than Longstaff and believes that 18-year-old Lewis Miley is the answer to that.

Newcastle are willing to sell Longstaff but in an ideal world, he would be kept around. PSR has crippled the club to the extent that sales like this need to be made.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell has a lot of work to do in January and Longstaff’s future is just one of the many obstacles he has to overcome.

Newcastle youth prospects can be inspired by Longstaff

There aren’t many players who have come through Newcastle’s academy and made the number of appearances Longstaff has.

The 27-year-old has made 201 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions scoring 16 goals and bagging 10 assists.

Newcastle’s youth setup is a lot different to how it was when Longstaff came through with a bigger focus on youth recruitment and development being taken since Newcastle’s takeover in October 2021.

The signings of Cathal Heffernan, Trevan Sanusi and Rory Finneran give Newcastle a great foundation to build on in the future while fans will be hoping that Miley can realise his potential and become a mainstay in Newcastle’s squad.

Fans have enjoyed seeing their side play in the UEFA Youth League beating the likes of PSG and AC Milan in the process.
