Newcastle United got the job done as the Premier League returned on Wednesday night.
For the first time in the club’s history, Newcastle United went into a Premier League game as champions of the Carabao Cup.
The emotional energy expended from the win over Liverpool at Wembley, the subsequent celebrations on Saturday and the international break more generally always threatened to make Wednesday night’s home game against Brentford a difficult one.
The visitors had won five consecutive games away from home but Newcastle managed to beat Brentford 2-1, claiming a vital three points in the race to qualify for the Champions League.
Sandro Tonali’s wonder-strike against Brentford secured the victory for Eddie Howe’s side, who now sit fifth in the Premier League table.
There are however, injury concerns to contend with. Alexander Isak was forced off in the second-half, while Kieran Trippier appeared to have picked up a knock too.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest Newcastle United injury news.

Alexander Isak
Isak was forced off in the second-half against Brentford, sparking concern about a potential fresh injury.
The striker appeared to look okay when coming off but Howe confirmed Isak suffered a groin injury against Brentford.
“He wasn’t feeling 100% and wasn’t sure in his movement,” said the Newcastle United manager.
“Hopefully he’s OK.”
Potential return date: Unknown
Kieran Trippier
Trippier has come back into the starting lineup of late and was excellent in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
The right-back’s experience will no doubt be crucial for the run-in but, unfortunately, the former England international was forced to make way for Emil Krafth during the closing stages against Brentford.
“He said he was feeling a cramp sensation in his groin,” confirmed Howe. “We hope it’s nothing serious. That’s the negative today.”
Potential return date: Unknown
Anthony Gordon
Anthony Gordon missed the Brentford game for two reasons.
Firstly, the winger was serving the last of his three-match suspension following the red card he was shown against Brighton in the FA Cup fifth-round in early March.
However, the 24-year-old may not have featured even if the suspension was not in play.
Gordon is yet to resume full training for Newcastle after picking up a thigh injury while playing for England against Albania earlier this month.
Still, Howe has confirmed Newcastle hope Gordon will return to full training in the reasonably imminent future.
“Anthony has a really nasty bruise in and around his thigh/groin area,” he said.
“He’s up and running, feeling quite good.
“We haven’t seen him train with the group yet. We anticipate he will do that in the next few days, hopefully.”
Potential return date: April 2025
Sven Botman
Defender Sven Botman has seen his injury nightmare continue this season.
After a brief return following knee surgery last year, Botman required another operation.
There appeared to be fears the Dutchman would miss the rest of the season, though reports suggest Botman could return earlier than expected.
Earlier this week, Howe said: “Sven’s not too bad. He’s had a very minor operation just to clean out some floating bone that was in his knee and was causing him a problem.
“The initial diagnosis was between six and eight weeks but I think he’s already got through a few of those. Fingers crossed we’ll see him in May.”
Potential return date: May 2025
Jamaal Lascelles
Jamaal Lascelles has not played at all this season, having undergone knee surgery last season.
Sadly for the defender, his recovery is taking even longer than Botman’s.
Howe has confirmed Lascelles may not play again this season, although that remains to be seen.
“I don’t know if we will see Jamaal again (this season) and I don’t want to set a target or time,” said the Newcastle manager earlier this week.
“He has started very light training with the squad.
“But on the drills that are not competitive he has joined in. He has looked very good, it is small steps for him.
“We are hoping to get him to join in and competing before the end of the season whether that ties in with the team and whether he gets there in time for competitive action we will see.”
Potential return date: Unknown
Lewis Hall
Lewis Hall has been one of Newcastle’s standout players this season, coming on leaps and bounds following a difficult start at the club.
In a major blow Howe, however, Hall will not play again this season after surgery on an ankle injury.
A club statement released last month read: “Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall will miss the rest of the 2024/25 season after sustaining an injury to a bone in his foot.
“The 20-year-old was injured during the Magpies’ Premier League fixture at Liverpool.
“Following a scan and advice from a specialist, Lewis will undergo surgery before a period of rehabilitation with the club’s medical team.
“Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Lewis the very best with his surgery and recovery.”
As such, the England international is not expected to feature before pre-season preparations get underway later this year.
Potential return date: Summer 2025
