Sandro Tonali’s moment of genius saw Newcastle United claim a crucial win over Brentford in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Indeed, Newcastle United returned from their Carabao Cup celebrations with a difficult-looking tie against the Bees in the Premier League.

Thomas Frank’s side had won five consecutive away games and made Newcastle work for their three points.

Still, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle claimed a vital 2-1 win over Brentford, thanks in part to Tonali.

The Italian scored an unusual goal from what had looked an impossible angle after Bryan Mbeumo had cancelled out Alexander Isak’s opener.

It was a truly memorable strike from Tonali, who has been one of the standout players of the season.

Asked about the incident, the midfielder gave a rather honest answer…

Sandro Tonali confirms whether or not he meant his goal against Brentford

It would be easy for a player to suggest they meant such a strike, particularly someone of Tonali’s supreme quality.

However, the former AC Milan star does not seem to want to take too much credit for it.

Speaking to Premier League Productions shortly after the nervy three points were won, Tonali admitted his effort was actually meant to be a cross.

“Honestly, it was 70% cross and 30% shot,” he said. “It was difficult for the goalkeeper and difficult also for me. Also a little bit of luck.”

Sandro Tonali comes good on Newcastle United message

While the Carabao Cup celebrations were all well and good, Howe’s squad still have a job to do.

Qualifying for the Champions League would be the icing on the cake for this most historic of seasons.

Well in the race as things stand, it would actually be a disappointment not to see Newcastle do so right now.

Prior to the Brentford game, Tonali warned Newcastle players they have to qualify for the Champions League.

Taking action into his own hands on Wednesday night, the midfielder certainly did his end of the bargain. Sometimes you have to make your own luck.

Fortune favours the brave, after all…
