Newcastle United will travel to League One leaders Birmingham City in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Despite an early wobble, Newcastle knocked out Bromley thanks to goals from Lewis Miley, Anthony Gordon and a first Toon goal from William Osula.

Many believed Martin Dubravka would’ve left Newcastle by now, but the 35-year-old was again named in the starting XI as the club looked to hand him a new contract.

The Magpies will travel to St Andrews for the first time since 2017 where they drew 0-0 with the Blues – both teams were in the Championship at the time, but things look a lot different now.

Newcastle are flying in the Premier League and just 90 minutes away from another Carabao Cup final. Birmingham were relegated to League One last season but were taken over by an American conglomerate which included NFL star, Tom Brady.

Birmingham now sit top of League One, two points clear with two games in hand. The tie is set to take place on the weekend commencing February 8, just a few days after the Magpies Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Arsenal at St James’ Park.

The games being so close together means that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe could heavily rotate again for the tie, giving the likes of Miley and Osula another chance to impress.

Fans may see another appearance for young star Trevan Sanusi against Birmingham. Sanusi made his first competitive appearance for Newcastle on Sunday, coming on as a late substitute.

Now, Newcastle fans have reacted to the draw on social media.

Mixed emotions from Newcastle fans after Birmingham City draw

It’s another away draw in the FA Cup for the Magpies, they spent all of their campaign on the road against Sunderland, Fulham and Manchester City.

Newcastle fans reacted to the draw on X, some are relieved with the draw while others are keen to give fans a reality check.

“Decent draw. Happy to avoid Premier League opposition.” one fan said. While another wrote: “League 1 but they’re doing very well this season. Will need most of the first team.”

This fan looked at Birmingham’s form this season: “They’ve only lost 2 league games all season, regardless of them being in League 1, this will be a difficult tie,” they wrote.

Another fan added: “Class draw, take that all day long.”

“League 1 team… play a few starters and we’ll be sound,” one fan wrote.

Finally, another fan said: “Won’t be an easy game but a decent draw at the same time Will be a proper cup tie you’d imagine. Atmosphere will be bouncing there.”

Newcastle can still win a domestic treble

Howe is keen to win Newcastle’s first silverware since 1969 this season, but it could still be much more than that.

Newcastle’s FA Cup draw was more than favourable in comparison to other teams. Aston Villa drew Tottenham Hotspur while Manchester United drew Leicester.

Elsewhere, Everton drew Bournemouth and Brighton drew Chelsea. There are four more Premier League teams guaranteed to exit the FA Cup in the fourth round – Newcastle have a big chance to go far in the competition should they get past Birmingham.

Newcastle’s great run of form in the Premier League puts them 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool. It’s a far cry, but if they continue their run fans could be celebrating more than one trophy this season.

There’s a long way to go before the end of the season, but the Magpies are in the driver’s seat for at least one trophy this season.
