What sources are now saying about James Trafford joining Newcastle United after Martin Dubravka U-turn

The goalkeeping situation at Newcastle United is very interesting.

Over the course of an otherwise pretty slow summer for Newcastle, the club brought into two more options in that particular area.

Odysseas Vlachodimos might have only been part of the Elliot Anderson deal amid a PSR scramble towards the end of June and John Ruddy may never play a first-team game but, the fact is, manager Eddie Howe has a lot of options there.

Mark Gillespie, of course, remains on the books and even had his contract extended relatively recently.

Nick Pope is generally the first choice when fit but there’s also Martin Dubravka to consider.

The Slovakian had been expected to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab after Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Arsenal but that appears to have changed since.

Still, Newcastle reportedly remain on the lookout for a replacement for Dubravka if and when he does leave.

James Trafford of Burnley has been linked and now some fresh insight has emerged.

According to The Daily Mail, sources are suggesting that it is almost certain that a deal won’t happen this month.

Head of recruitment Steve Nickson has been scouting the 22-year-old recently and while a deal is unlikely in January, it will be revisited come the summer.

Newcastle are still trying to get Martin Dubravka to stay

Trafford has been linked for months, so it seems relatively safe to suggest he’s a long-term target for the club.

Still, that doesn’t mean Dubravka is certain to go even upon the expiration of his contract at the end of the season.

The club will reportedly try and convince him to stay even if that means signing a new deal, albeit the player might have other ideas.

Quite what that means for Trafford remains to be seen…
