Newcastle United fans make first Ross Wilson demand after sporting director appointment

Newcastle United fans have made their first request to new sporting director Ross Wilson.

It’s been a busy Saturday for Newcastle United, even without any football due to the international break, with the club appointing Ross Wilson as their new sporting director.

Newcastle have been without one since Paul Mitchell’s surprising exit in June, which left them without a figurehead in the transfer window.

As a result, the Magpies struggled in the market and Eddie Howe was forced to watch on as several of his top targets went elsewhere.

Things should run a lot smoother with Wilson, who made 43 signings during his spell at Nottingham Forest, now at the helm.

Forest enjoyed their best season in decades last term, with most of the team being made up of Wilson’s signings, like Murillo, Nikola Milenkovic, a certain Anthony Elanga and none other than Elliot Anderson.

Now Newcastle fans are hoping Wilson can work his magic to bring Anderson back to St. James’ Park.

Newcastle fans want Elliot Anderson back at St. James’ Park

Wilson has shown he has a keen eye for a player and Anderson has gone from strength to strength since moving to the City Ground.

He is now an England international and looks bound to start in Thomas Tuchel’s side at the World Cup next year.

Newcastle fans aren’t annoyed with Anderson, given the circumstances of his departure, and, in fact, are desperate to see him return.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, user @MadGeordie3 said in response to Wilson’s announcement: “Please first up Sandro Tonali , Tino Livramento and Sven Botman new deals.

“Then let’s plan how we bring Elliot Anderson home Forest please. Bring him home.”

@_CJF97 expressed his hopes for the signing too. He posted: “Hopefully this comes with a naughty Elliot Anderson clause,” about the Wilson news.

“Hope he had a word with Elliot Anderson before he left not to sign a new deal as we’d be coming in for him,” @twatson2502 added.

Finally, @NikBoReid humorously said: “Took the points off you last week. Stole your Sporting Director. Enjoy Anderson while you have him because he’ll be coming home soon.”

What Eddie Howe has said about selling Elliot Anderson

Wilson is a canny operator in the transfer market, as Newcastle experienced first-hand when he signed Anderson.

Newcastle urgently needed a big-money sale as they were on the verge of breaking PSR rules and, as the midfielder was homegrown, his exit would go down as pure profit

Yet, not content with getting an extremely talented young player Newcastle normally wouldn’t sell, Wilson drove a hard bargain and made the Toon buy Odysseas Vlachodimos for £20m as part of the deal.

Though the signing didn’t harm PSR as his fee can be amortised over the length of his contract, Newcastle have been stuck with a goalkeeper they didn’t want or need.

Asked about Anderson before the Premier League game with Forest last week, Howe admitted Newcastle knew they were selling him too cheaply at £35m.

“We knew that [Anderson was sold cheaply],” he said.

“We knew that the minute that it was going to happen, or likely to happen. We were massively selling him at a big discount but the position we were in, we weren’t in a very strong negotiating position at all.

“It was that or a points deduction, so I’ve said many times, we had no choice but to make the sale.”
