Newcastle United could pull off PSR revenge after Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson exits

Newcastle United endured a miserable 2024 summer transfer window because of three letters – PSR.

The Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules have limited Newcastle United’s ability to invest, with three windows passing without a major signing arriving at St James’ Park.

It was particularly infuriating last summer, with the Magpies forced to cash in on two rising stars. Yankuba Minteh went to Brighton, while Elliot Anderson joined Nottingham Forest.

Those deals, combined with Dan Ashworth’s move to Manchester United, meant that Newcastle complied with PSR.

Clubs were able to take advantage of Newcastle’s situation, at a time when things were so desperate that Anthony Gordon almost had to leave.

Whether Newcastle United could make any signings in June

Fast forward 12 months and Newcastle’s PSR position is very different. It has improved massively, with Miguel Almiron’s departure giving the Magpies a financial lift.

There is also the looming sale of Lloyd Kelly, who is going to join Juventus permanently for £20million – if the Serie A giants qualify for Europe.

There is no need for a fire sale on Tyneside this summer. In fact, the Magpies could be in a position to exploit other clubs’ PSR position.

That is according to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, who has been asked in a Q&A if Newcastle will be active when the summer transfer window briefly opens before the Club World Cup in June.

The journalist has stated that Newcastle very well could be active between June 1st and June 10th, but it will depend on who is available to them and whether or not Eddie Howe’s side are in the Champions League.

Waugh added: “Some inside the club have suggested there is scope to make incomings before the end of the financial year [June 30th], whereas others have played down that likelihood.”

Eddie Howe will want Newcastle’s transfer business done early

Like any manager, Eddie Howe will be eager for Newcastle United to conduct their transfer business as soon as possible.

The sooner new recruits arrive, the sooner they can be integrated into the squad and begin to learn what the gaffer wants from them.

Of course, that is easier said than done.

Newcastle are going to sign a centre-back, while right wing will also be a priority position for the Magpies.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that Marc Guehi is a target for Newcastle again, after Paul Mitchell failed to sign him last summer. In terms of wingers, it remains to be seen who the Magpies’ top target will be.
