Much was made about Elliot Anderson’s return to Newcastle United before Nottingham Forest’s trip to St James’ Park.
While Anderson did play against Newcastle United last season, Sunday was the first time he came back to his boyhood club as a fully-fledged England international.
Newcastle, of course, did not want to sell Anderson but opted to cash in on him rather than any one of their established stars at the time in order to satisfy the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
It was a shame to see the midfielder depart but, in all honesty, he may not have developed at such a rapid rate if he had stayed at the club given all the competition.
The 22-year-old was impressive in the first half of Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest but was eventually outmuscled by the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton.
Sadly for Anderson, he gave away the penalty from which Nick Woltemade scored Newcastle’s late second goal to wrap up the victory. Still, the home fans had a message of support for him.

Newcastle United fans chant at Elliot Anderson
As per Jordan Cronin of Newcastle World on social media platform X, Newcastle fans were serenading Anderson after the foul on Guimaraes.
Anderson had little complaint when referee Peter Bankes awarded the spot-kick and there can be little doubt it was indeed a penalty.
It was unfortunate for Anderson, who then would surely have heard the chants of “Geordie Maradona” from the Gallowgate End.
Newcastle United want to re-sign Elliot Anderson
Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle would love to re-sign Anderson.
He’s developed so well at Forest, however, that he’s also being linked with other Premier League clubs such as Manchester United.
If Forest continue to struggle this season, it’s difficult to imagine the club being able to keep a hold of him.
Still, sadly for Eddie Howe, Newcastle do not have a buy-back clause for Anderson.
They were not negotiating from a position of strength when they sold him, so could hardly demand one at the time.
