A former Newcastle United star has recently come out of retirement to link up with one of his old teammates.

After retiring from football, some players tend to begin new careers or go into management.

Shaka Hislop worked for NASA before joining Newcastle and became a pundit for ESPN after retirement.

More recently, Kevin Nolan took the Northampton job and has guided the Cobblers to safety in League One this season. The former Newcastle star had a stint at Notts County, where he signed Shola Ameobi and also won the Conference League with West Ham in 2023.

Some former Newcastle players are now at clubs most would have never imagined they would play. Andy Carroll is in France with Bordeaux, who are now in the country’s fourth tier.

However, it was recently announced that a former Newcastle man, who is approaching 40, has joined a new club alongside one of his teammates during his time on Tyneside.

Papiss Cisse retired from football in 2023 after a relatively successful career across several leagues. The former Senegal international spent nearly five years at Newcastle, scoring 37 goals in 117 games.

Cisse’s best form undoubtedly came at the beginning of his Newcastle career, where he scored 13 goals in 14 Premier League games, but he moved to China upon the Magpies’ relegation in 2016.

Stints in Turkey and France followed before he hung up his boots after an unsuccessful trial at Macclesfield.

It was recently revealed that Cisse nearly joined Daily Hill FC, a club in the tenth tier of English football. The move fell through because Cisse had actually linked-up with former Newcastle teammate Steven Taylor, who is now the manager of Dubai side Al Qabila FC.

The club are currently pushing for promotion from the UAE’s third division. Taylor has brought Cisse in as extra firepower to help them get the job done.

So far the move has proved to be a great one, as Cisse has found the back of the net five times in his first five games. In Al Qabila’s most recent game, Cisse scored a brace to help ‘The Tribe’ to a 5-0 win against Sport Support.

Al-Qabila are currently fifth in the third division, there is still a chance they can be promoted but they are almost 30 points behind United II in first place.

Newcastle fans will be pleased to see Cisse back in football, but no matter what goal he scores in Dubai nothing will beat his specatular strike against Chelsea in 2012.

Alan Shearer said Cisse’s goal against Chelsea was the best Newcastle goal he has ever seen – it’s hard to disagree with him.

Cisse teased a potential return to football earlier in 2025 when he was pictured with Taylor and former Newcastle defender Danny Simpson.

After retiring from football in 2024, Simpson made the bizarre choice to move into influencer boxing. He fought YouTuber Danny Aarons to a draw on KSI’s Misfits event.

As it stands, there are no further fights planned for Simpson and no return to football has been mooted.
