Alan Shearer is bound to have seen thousands of Newcastle United’s goals.

The club legend himself scored 206 for the Magpies in his 10 years at the club, more than any other player in Newcastle’s history.

Newcastle are in goal-scoring form once again this season, after a shaky start they’re now flying in the Premier League and look set for another trip to Wembley in the Carabao Cup.

Like Shearer, Alexander Isak has scored in seven straight Premier League games – something only Shearer and Joe Willock can say they’ve done for Newcastle.

Toon boss Eddie Howe’s fast and fluid football is a throwback to the days of the entertainers when Shearer partnered with Les Ferdinand up front, fans will undoubtedly be comparing those days with now.

The Toon legend has been full of praise for Howe’s side recently. Shearer congratulated Newcastle on Tuesday following the Magpies win at Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

Amongst Newcastle’s goals, there have been some stunning strikes – Now, Shearer has chosen his favourite of the lot.

Shearer names Papiss Cisse’s screamer vs Chelsea as the best Newcastle goal

Newcastle United fans will never forget that Papiss Cisse goal against Chelsea. Newcastle were 1-0 up in added time, Ryan Taylor took a throw-in down the left wing which Shola Ameobi knocked down to Cisse who took the shot with the outside of his foot on a tight angle – the ball sailed up and over Petr Cech and into the back of the net.

Fans forget that it was Cisse’s second goal of the night, he also scored a fine half-volley in the first half to give Newcastle the lead.

Talking on the Rest is Football podcast, Shearer alongside Gary Lineker and Micah Richards talked about the best goal they had ever seen their team score. Lineker chose Youri Tielemans’ goal for Leicester in the FA Cup final while Richards chose Elano’s stunning free-kick against the Magpies in 2007.

On his choice, Shearer said: “Can you remember that goal at Stamford Bridge on that half volley, the slicer?

“Was it Cisse? The half-volley from the corner, how on earth he got that.

“I think that got goal of the month or goal of the season – it was an unbelievable goal.”

Rather unselfishly, Shearer didn’t pick one of his own despite Lineker’s encouragement. Cisse scored 44 goals in 131 appearances for the Magpies between 2012 and 2016.

Shearer names his most embarrassing Newcastle moment

While Shearer has enjoyed many memorable moments for Newcastle, there have been a few he wishes to forget. For example, the sending-off in his 100th Newcastle appearance or the injury he picked up in what would end up being his last game for Newcastle.

However, the one that takes the cake for Shearer is the penalty miss against Sunderland in 2000. To make things worse, it was in front of the Gallowgate End at St James’ Park.

Again on the Rest is Football podcast, Shearer tells Lineker and Richards how he woke up to find fans had left waste outside his house following the miss.

Newcastle went on to lose the game 2-1.
