Reported Newcastle United target Lucas Paqueta is having a season to remember in France.

While his best friend Bruno Guimaraes may have left him, the attacking midfielder is having a sensational campaign with Lyon.

Lyon are struggling down in seventh, but that hasn’t stopped Paqueta impressing. The 24-year-old has eight goals and six assists in the league, and has been nominated for an end of season award.

The Brazil international is up for Ligue 1 Player of the Year. He’s been nominated alongside Kylian Mbappe, Dimitri Payet, Wissam Ben Yedder and Martin Terrier.

You’ll notice two superstars not on that list – Lionel Messi and Neymar. That’s right, Paqueta has been nominated ahead of the greatest of all time and the most expensive player on the planet.

Perhaps that says more about the PSG superstars, but it’s also a testament to Paqueta’s season in France.

Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes congratulates his friend Lucas Paqueta

Following the announcement, Newcastle midfielder Bruno congratulated his former teammate.

He wrote on Twitter: “You’re the best bro.”

Of course, there’s a chance the Samba duo could be teammates once again next season. Newcastle have been linked with a move for Paqueta.

The Magpies tried and failed to sign him in January, but are reportedly interested once again.

The Chronicle have claimed that he will cost £58million. That’s a huge fee – more than Newcastle have ever spent on a single player.

But he’s an incredibly gifted footballer, which is no surprise considering he plays for Brazil. A move would delight supporters, who are keen to see Paqueta head to St James’ Park. It would make Bruno very happy too, having previously spoke of his desire to see his friend follow him to Newcastle.

Hopefully the price tag doesn’t increase even further if he’s named Ligue 1 POTY.
