Newcastle United still have areas to strengthen during this summer’s transfer window.

While Eddie Howe has been able to bring both Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes to the club this summer, the Newcastle manager has admitted to feeling some frustration in the market.

Still, that does not mean the club aren’t on the lookout for potential recruits.

Indeed, a new left-back is thought to be on the agenda this summer as Howe reportedly toys with the idea of converting Dan Burn back into a central defender.

Arsenal star Kieran Tierney has repeatedly been linked with a move to St James’ Park, though such talk has quietened down of late.

Until now, at least.

Newcastle remain keen to sign Kieran Tierney this summer

According to The Times, the Scotland international is still a target on Tyneside.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has admitted his squad is too big and that players must be sold following their moves for Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice.

With that in mind, Tierney could be sold in order to raise funds in north London, with Newcastle monitoring his situation.

Arsenal’s £25m signing has lost his place in the starting lineup following the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko, hence why he may be on the way out as the club look to shift players on soon.

Still a difficult deal to do for Newcastle

While its promising to see Arsenal potentially selling a player Newcastle are keen on, it does not mean signing Tierney will be easy.

Quite why the Gunners would willingly strengthen a positional rival without charging a big fee is up for debate.

Throw in the fact that FFP constraints loom large over Newcastle and that makes things even more difficult.

Then there’s the injuries. Transfermarkt data notes Tierney has effectively missed over a whole season (48 games) through various problems since leaving Celtic for north London.

Though hailed as a “warrior” by pundit Ashley Cole, Newcastle’s path to signing Tierney looks difficult.
