Newcastle United feel they are reaching the limit of what they are able to spend due to Financial Fair Play.
Due to the seemingly bottomless wealth of Newcastle’s 80% owners it often seemed like the Magpies could spent freely in the transfer market. Unfortunately, thanks to Financial Fair Play there is a huge Scrooge McDuckian vault door keeping Newcastle from being able to access its spending power properly.
In fairness, since the PIF took over, Newcastle have spent around £300million on transfers and only receiving around £15million back into the club through the sale of Chris Wood to Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle are right up against their FFP limit
It’s with that in mind that The Telegraph report that Newcastle could be about to hit their FFP limit following the signing of Harvey Barnes which is expected to be completed very soon.
The report goes on to say that ‘difficult conversations’ have taken place within the club when it comes to transfers with targets being identified and then dismissed due to financial concerns.

There’s a big feeling now that the move for Harvey Barnes could spell the end of Newcastle’s transfer activity already, with there still being several key positions that need strengthening.
Newcastle may have spent well, bringing in some top quality players but now it’s becoming clear that the club believe they have ‘overspent’ and will now have to make do with what they have, or move some players on to bring in more funds.
Newcastle brought in loads more revenue but it might not be enough
That is on top of the Champions League money, the increased TV revenue and the new sponsorship deals, one of which is the £25million-a-year front-of-shirt sponsorship deal with Sela.

Newcastle realistically will still need another centre-back and another full-back to be anywhere near ready to compete next season, and there’s also a school of thought that suggests a new striker wouldn’t go amiss.
If the reports are indeed true and Newcastle have ran out of wiggle room for FFP it’s going to make the rest of this transfer window very interesting and frustrating.
