Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has claimed that defender Kieran Tierney is part of his plans this season, despite transfer links with Newcastle United.
The left-back lost his place as a first-choice pick following the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko, and it seemed likely that he would depart the Emirates this summer with Newcastle a heavily rumoured destination.
The Scotland international is a popular figure at Arsenal, but his lack of minutes, as well as Arteta picking Jakub Kiwior and Takehiro Tomiyasu over him even when Zinchenko was unavailable meant that he may have been keen on a move.
Tierney was heavily linked with Newcastle given their participation in the Champions League next year, their playing style and the fact that Newcastle is closer to Glasgow than London made St James’ Park his ideal destination.
However, Arteta has now stated that Tierney is in his plans, indicating that the 26-year-old will not leave the club this summer.
“It is obviously in our plans. He’s been really good and this is what we want, clear competition in the team,” he said.
Should Newcastle move for Tierney?
Whilst these comments suggest that he is unlikely to move, nothing has been ruled out, and Tierney could be an excellent addition to Eddie Howe’s side.
The left-back is strong defensively and also excels going forward, with crossing a particular strength of his.

Tierney seems perfectly suited to Howe’s setup and could replace Dan Burn as a more natural full-back, with plenty of European experience for both Celtic and Arsenal.
The defender has been described as a “warrior” by legendary full-back Ashley Cole, and he would also bring strong leadership and character to the dressing room, as well as adding serious quality on the pitch.
Even if he does not leave this summer, Newcastle should watch his progress closely next season, and if Tierney becomes unsettled, then he could be an option for next year.
