Newcastle news: Miguel Almiron’s starting place could come under threat

While all the talk of new signings at Newcastle United is hugely exciting, they’re going to have a knock-on effect.

At some point, the brilliant team Eddie Howe has built during the opening 18 months of his Newcastle tenure is going to go through a period of regeneration.

Though the likes of Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak look set to play leading roles at St James’ Park in the years to come, other positions aren’t quite as settled.

Clearly, there is little reason for immediate change. Still, all of Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are over 30 and do not represent the most long-term options in the world.

At left-back, Matt Targett’s future could perhaps come under threat given links to Kieran Tierney and perhaps the same could be said of Sean Longstaff amid suggestions the Magpies want to land Scott McTominay.

That leaves Miguel Almiron.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Miguel Almiron’s starting position could be under threat.

Hailed as “superb” by Howe after a fantastic season to have seen him score a Premier League career-best 11 goals in 24 starts, the 29-year-old was rewarded with a new contract in February.

Still, amid links with the likes of Ansu Fati and Harvey Barnes, it is claimed that Newcastle might want to move on from having Almiron as a regular starter as they push to become a major force in European football.

A competitive squad can only be a good thing

While it seems churlish to downplay Almiron’s impact this season, building a competitive squad can only be a good thing.

Doing that, however, means some difficult decisions lie ahead.

Almiron has at least been rewarded with a new deal both to reflect his stunning season and protect his value should an offer present itself.

Certainly, there’s no suggestion that the Paraguay international has to drop out completely. But if Newcastle can bring in another forward this summer, it’s only natural his starting berth would come under threat.

That’s the kind of relentless drive to improve the club simply have to have if they are going to continue competing.
