Eddie Howe has heaped praise on Miguel Almiron for his ‘superb’ role in Newcastle United’s second goal against Leicester City.

The Magpies won 2-0 on Tuesday night, booking their place in the semi final of the Carabao Cup – the first time they have reached the final four of a domestic competition since 2005.

Newcastle were dominant against the Foxes, but needed two moments of magic to secure victory. The first came from local lad Dan Burn, who burst into the box to score his first ever goal for his boyhood club.

While the first held sentimental value, the second was simply a thing of beauty from a footballing perspective.

Kieran Trippier hurled a throw-in at Callum Wilson, who laid it off to Almiron. The Paraguayan then drove at the Leicester defence with speed, before playing a defence-splitting pass for Joelinton.

Newcastle’s number seven did the rest, slotting the ball past Danny Ward with just one touch to put the victory beyond doubt. It was a glorious finish from the 26-year-old, made possible by Almiron’s pass.

Howe reacts to Newcastle’s second goal vs Leicester

After the game, Howe spoke to NUFC TV. He expressed his delight at Newcastle’s second goal of the night.

“I think it was a brilliant goal,” Howe said.

“Miggy’s pass was superb because Joe didn’t have to break his stride, he could really concentrate on the ball. It was a great finish with his left foot, again from a tight angle.

“Two really good goals today.”

Brilliant team goal

Newcastle’s second was a thing of beauty. The combinations and movement, combined with the finish, absolutely delighted Howe – and the goal had his fingerprints all over it.

Without his input and coaching, it is difficult to see Almiron having the confidence and positional sense to grab that ball from Wilson then drive towards goal. Then he showed composure to play in Joelinton.

And if the Brazilian had been that cool in front of goal when he arrived, he might still be a striker.

As Howe says, the pass was perfect. It allowed Joelinton to take the shot first time and power it home in front of the Gallowgate.

On a special night inside St James’ Park, Newcastle scored two wonderful goals. Now they are in the semi finals of the Carabao Cup, and will find out their opponents tonight.
