Miguel Almiron returned to Atlanta in January after six years at Newcastle United.

The Paraguayan was a great servant to the club having become Newcastle’s record signing in 2019, a title he held for two years before Joe Willock joined.

Miguel Almiron’s Newcastle exit left Toon boss Eddie Howe with just one natural right winger until the end of the season. Even though Almiron was not playing as much he still gave Newcastle a useful squad option if Jacob Murphy was ever unavailable.

Newcastle players Callum Wilson and Sven Botman congratulated Almiron when his move away was confirmed. Fans were also in agreement that Almiron gave everything for Newcastle during his time on Tyneside.

Almiron reunited with former Newcastle man Deandre Yedlin in Atlanta United’s recent friendly against FC Cincinnati. The pair shared a heartwarming moment that was sure to give Newcastle fans flashbacks.

The 31-year-old is now settled back in at his new club and has already made history in his first competitive game since leaving the Magpies.

Miguel Almiron enters Atlanta United history books after Newcastle exit

Although he is now in the MLS, Almiron promised to be a Newcastle fan from afar. The decision to sell the Paraguayan was now an easy one for Newcastle staff – Eddie Howe admitted he didn’t want to sell Almiron but stated it was something the club had to do to strengthen their PSR position.

American media praised Almiron in his Atlanta return – a friendly against New England Revolution earlier in February, saying that he ‘stood out’ amongst the rest of the team.

Now, Almiron has officially etched himself in Atlanta’s history books by bagging an assist in their first MLS game of the season. The assist is a significant one because it puts Almiron on 50 goal involvements for the club, becoming only the fourth player to do that in Atlanta’s history.

His assist proved to be a vital one as it helped Atlanta secure a 3-2 win against CF Montreal in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Almiron also played alongside former Premier League stars Brad Guzan and Mateusz Klich in the win.

How American media reacted to Miguel Almiron’s debut

Almiron is looking to secure another trophy for Atlanta to add to his MLS Cup win back in 2018. They’re on the right track after the opening-day win.

American media were full of praise for Almiron after the game – it’s clear he left his mark on the league when he left in 2019 and has been welcomed back with open arms upon his return.

OurSportsCentral referred to Almiron’s return as ‘triumphant’ for bagging the assist. While SportsIllustrated gave the 31-year-old an 8.3/10 for his performance.

The Atlanta fans were in high spirits when they saw Almiron return to the pitch for the first time in six years. Videos on social media have shown the fantastic reaction he received when his name was called.

Newcastle will continue to struggle without Almiron’s depth, but the Paraguayan now has a chance to make more history at his new club.
