Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall is enjoying quite the season thus far.

Indeed, after initially struggling for game time at Newcastle due to doubts about his defending, Hall has really turned things around of late.

The 20-year-old has been tipped as the best young player in the Premier League this season by former Toon hero Shay Given, while manager Eddie Howe has talked up the level upon which the former Chelsea youngster is now playing.

Such has been the level of his form, Hall was handed an England debut over the international break and impressed interim boss Lee Carsley.

While Thomas Tuchel will soon come in and will no doubt be looking to stamp his authority on the Three Lions squad, there would appear to be little reason why Hall cannot keep his place.

To see the player rewarded for all his hard work – so intense it reportedly shocked people on Tyneside – is simply fantastic.

Speaking about his rapid rise of late, Hall named three teammates as major reasons as to why he was able to come through what was a “dark place” during his first few months at the club.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Hall revealed that Dan Burn, Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley helped support him through a very tough period when he wasn’t getting much in the way of game time.

“It was really tough,” he said.

“You start doubting yourself and things around you. It can be quite a dark place after training.

“Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley, players like that who, when I went into training, I got on well with them. They were players that really brightened up my day.

“I think there are a lot of players, like Dan Burn, for example, who have been really good to me. He’s always looked out for me and understood how I was feeling when I wasn’t playing.”

Hall surely would have taken heart from seeing Anthony Gordon struggle during his first few months as a Newcastle player before turning things around himself, albeit the two weren’t teammates on Tyneside until the summer of 2023.

However, they are two players who have proven that hard work and dedication can help Howe bring a developing young career along.

Interestingly, summer signing William Osula looks to be in a similar position. He’s not getting too much first-team action right now but Howe has talked up his similarities with Hall before.

Hopefully, lighting will strike a third time for Newcastle.
