Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall enjoyed a remarkable night in his young career on Thursday.

Indeed, the defender was handed an England debut away in Greece as the Three Lions got back on track with a 3-0 win over their Nations League rivals.

Hall came on at half-time and duly impressed sections of the support, with all his hard work at Newcastle paying off.

It was not long ago that there were doubts about the player’s defending, with the youngster initially struggling after leaving boyhood club Chelsea.

Still, the 20-year-old put in the hard yards behind the scenes and was duly reward with a first senior cap at international level – which luckily will not cost Newcastle any extra money.

Certainly, it’s fantastic to have seen Hall rewarded. He really has been fantastic this season, which shows both the dedication of the player and the work Eddie Howe has done on the coaching pitch.

Interim Three Lions boss Lee Carsley was full of praise for Hall in the build-up to the game and talked positively about him after it too.

Speaking to ITV Sport, Carsley talked of how people may have thought his England side were too inexperienced after a number of high-profile dropouts.

However, he believes the performances from players like Hall underline the talent the country boasts.

“People were speaking last night about the inexperience within the squad but these players play week in, week out in the Premier League at a really high level,” he said.

“It’s testament to Lewis [Hall] and Newcastle that he was able to come on in an atmosphere like that and perform the way he did.”

The Newcastle United manager is thought to see similarities between Hall and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw, who of course has been England’s starting left-back for a while now.

However, Shaw has consistently struggled to stay fit over the years and now appears to have genuine competition in that position – an area which has proven a problem for England at times.

To suggest on the basis of 45 minutes that Hall has moved ahead of Shaw in the pecking order would obviously be too much.

Still, there is now genuine competition and more strong performances will give incoming England boss Thomas Tuchel a decision to make.
