There have been reports stating that Newcastle may appoint a manager on a short term contract to replace Steve Bruce.
However, the latest update from journalist Fabrizio Romano suggests otherwise.
Paulo Fonseca is still the frontrunner for the Magpies job, and Romano has stated on Twitter that an agreement between the 48-year-old and Newcastle is ‘getting closer’.

Not only is it getting closer but it will be a ‘long term’ contract if the owners decide to go with Fonseca.
Paulo Fonseca on a long term contract would be a good move
No matter who Newcastle bring in, they need time to build.
While we are in the relegation zone right now, we aren’t a million miles away from safety. This isn’t the deep waters of a relegation dog fight. It’s still very early in the season.
The new owners must not panic and bring in a temporary fix. Despite calls for tried and tested managers like Roy Hodgson and Sam Allardyce, the club needs someone who can take them forward.
Fonseca can certainly do that. He will be able to get more out of the players than Steve Bruce.

His style of play may not suit everyone, but it will be up to the players to adapt. By January he’ll be able to improve his squad and climb the table.
Of course, it might not be Fonseca who gets the job. Sky’s Keith Downie stated yesterday that other candidates will be spoken to by the new owners.
But if Newcastle do decide to go with Fonseca, it looks like it will be an easy deal to complete, unlike his collapsed move to Tottenham over the summer.
