Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has stated that the new owners have held talks with Paulo Fonseca about becoming the next Newcastle boss.

The Magpies are without a manager after Steve Bruce was sacked on Wednesday.

Graeme Jones will take charge of the side on an interim basis, starting with Saturday’s important clash with Crystal Palace.

Fans will be eager to see a new manager appointed sooner rather than later, but the new owners must not rush this decision.

Deciding to remove Bruce was easy, even if it did take them longer than anticipated. However, picking his replacement will be anything but easy, especially with each member of the consortium likely having their own vision for who should manage the club.

Will Paulo Fonseca get the Newcastle job after talks?

It looks like Fonseca is one of the frontrunners. A report from the Telegraph states that he could be offered £6million to become Toon boss.

The 48-year-old reportedly impressed Amanda Staveley, but he is not the only man being considered.

Downie wrote on Twitter: “Newcastle’s new owners held talks with Paulo Fonseca remotely yesterday, but the consortium also want to speak to further candidates before deciding who will replace the departed Steve Bruce.”

All the talk from Newcastle fans right now is about Fonseca. He is the only manager who is doing the rounds in the media.

However, other names have been linked in recent days, such as Lucien Favre and Eddie Howe.

PIF and co are right to assess other options before they make a decision regarding Fonseca. Some fans would be happy with the former Shakhtar boss getting the job, but that doesn’t mean the new owners should rush.

If Newcastle can win on Saturday, it will buy them more time to make a decision. It will prove that Jones can keep the club ticking along while the owners assess their options.

If Newcastle lose, the pressure will mount to appoint Bruce’s replacement quickly.
