Simon Jordan believes that Newcastle should reunite with Sam Allardyce

Simon Jordan believes that Newcastle need a manager with a proven track record of staving off relegation, similar to the ilk of former Magpies boss Sam Allardyce.

Following Steve Bruce’s departure, the Toon Army find themselves winless and in a relegation battle with 30 Premier League games left.

A plethora of managers have been linked with the St James’ Park vacancy, including former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca, who was in the running for the Tottenham job in the summer.

Graeme Jones is currently in interim charge of the side and will be the manager for Saturday’s clash against Crystal Palace.

But Jordan feels the new Newcastle owners should resist luring a ‘Hollywood signing’ to Tyneside and focus on staying up before looking to embark on bigger and better chapters at the club.

The talkSPORT host said: “There’s no good getting a Hollywood signing right now. You need someone who is going to get in among the muck and bullets and get down and dirty to do what it takes to drag them out.”

Fonseca doesn’t have any previous Premier League experience and Jordan feels the Saudi-led consortium should offer the new manager a deal until the end of the season. If agreed targets are met they can extend their stay.

Jordan added: “Who that is going to be and what is going to incentivise them is going to be a short term job with an option at the end of it that says ‘if you get 50 points or 47 points you have an option to stay, but if we don’t take that option up we have to pay you some more money’.”

The former Crystal Palace chairman felt that the former England manager Sam Allardyce would be a worthy candidate to fill the void and return to St James’ Park for a second spell to keep the club in the top-flight.

Jordan concluded: “It does look like somebody like Sam Allardyce or that ilk, which might bring in a sharp intake of breath, but you need someone to get you away from this conundrum.

“Graeme Jones is not the answer because he’s not a manager, he’s a coach.”

Allardyce was only in charge under Mike Ashley for eight months in the 2007/08 season before being sacked and replaced by Kevin Keegan.

From 24 games, the 67-year-old, who has also managed Sunderland, won eight games at a win percentage of 33.3%, which is slightly better then Bruce. He had a 27.4% win percentage from 84 league games at Newcastle.

Allardyce does have a decent track record of keeping his teams in the Premier League, but it’s highly unlikely that there are going to be many Newcastle fans who share Jordan’s views in endorsing Allardyce for a return.
