Jacob Murphy was the star of the show as Newcastle United beat Leicester City 3-0 in the Premier League.
After Chelsea and Manchester City dropped points over the weekend, Newcastle United had a huge chance to gain ground in the race for Champions League football on Monday evening.
Newcastle have been prone to slipping up when presented with an opportunity to climb Premier League table, but nerves were settled when Jacob Murphy scored two minutes into the Leicester City clash.
Murphy then scored his second with 11 minutes on the clock after he followed up Fabian Schar’s outrageous effort from the halfway line.
Murphy was “fantastic” against Leicester, and he found himself hunting a hat-trick for much of the match. However, that wasn’t what was on his mind after his quickfire brace.

Jacob Murphy was not thinking about a hat-trick vs Leicester City
Murphy is enjoying his best season in a Newcastle United shirt and he is quickly becoming an integral part of Eddie Howe’s squad.
Murphy has formed a deadly partnership with Alexander Isak, and he is proving he can score and assist from the right.
His mentality is also what makes him so important for Newcastle and Howe will love Murphy’s answer when he was asked if his mind was on scoring a hat-trick.
“No, I was thinking about can I get an assist,” Murphy joked.
“No, it was more about can I keep doing my defensive work and then can I then go forward?
“And then you’re just waiting for any half-opportunity.
“Unfortunately none of them came, but it’s not all about the headlines of getting a hat-trick it’s about being present in the game, helping out and continuing like that.”
Jacob Murphy is fighting to keep his Newcastle United spot
With eight goals and 10 assists now across all competitions, Murphy is proving to be one of Newcastle’s most productive players in front of goal.
However, it is no secret that Newcastle want to sign a new right winger in the summer with the Magpies going several years without strengthening the position.
With Miguel Almiron leaving in January, it also means that there is an alarming lack of depth behind Murphy.
However, Newcastle will not want to sign a back-up option out wide, so Murphy has a difficult task on his hands trying to keep hold of his starting spot next season.
If he can maintain his current form, though, it is difficult to see how anyone could replace Murphy in Newcastle’s starting line-up currently.
