‘In the squad’… Newcastle could now have two players back from injury on Saturday

Newcastle United fans received some disappointing news regarding Alexander Isak on Wednesday night, but Thursday has offered a positive injury update.

While Alexander Isak could now be out for between two and four weeks after being forced off against Aston Villa, Eddie Howe could suddenly have some players back.

Newcastle United face Luton Town at St James’ Park on Saturday, as they look to build on Tuesday night’s incredible win at Villa Park. But Luton will be feeling confident too, having beat Brighton 4-0 on the same night, while they also won the reverse fixture against the Magpies.

It is going to be a tough game for Newcastle, but Eddie Howe might be able to welcome two key players back from injury.

Newcastle could have Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson back against Luton Town

That is according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, who has spoke on Sky Sports News (8.30am) about Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson potentially returning to fitness.

“We saw Jacob Murphy coming back last week and he’s played two games,” he said.

“As you say, it sounds as though they’re close [to getting more back from injury]. I think Harvey Barnes will probably be in the squad for the weekend visit here of Luton Town. [Callum] Wilson, I think, will be back in and around it as well.

“Suddenly the squad begins to look a lot stronger.”

That would be a big boost for Newcastle

It sounds like Barnes has a chance of being involved, as he looks to return to training. He has not featured since September due to a foot injury, having arrived in the summer for £39million from Leicester City.

It will be great to see more of him in black and white, but Callum Wilson’s return is much more timely.

As always, it coincides with Isak suffering an injury of his own. So many times it has been a case of ‘one in, one out’, with the duo rarely able to dovetail this season.

And with Isak set to miss Saturday’s game against Luton, Wilson could make his return. The 31-year-old has missed the last five games, but appears to have a chance to stop that run extending to six.

That is excellent news for Howe, although he will have to be cautious. Thrusting Wilson back into the starting XI would be a risk, so do not be surprised if Anthony Gordon leads the line on Saturday.

Wilson has spoke about his fitness himself, and was unable to confirm that he will be back this weekend.
