Tottenham suffered the same fate as Newcastle United after submitting a late £70m bid for Marc Guehi.
In the summer window, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi was Newcastle United’s top target. Newly-appointed sporting director Paul Mitchell was eager to sign the England international but ended up walking away from a deal.
Newcastle submitted several bids for Guehi over the summer, believed to be as high as £65m. Palace wanted ‘superstar money’ for Guehi which Newcastle simply couldn’t offer.
Palace chairman Steve Parish expected Guehi to leave but Newcastle were unable to get a deal over the line in time. A deal in January was made impossible by PSR.
Guehi remains on Newcastle’s radar for 2025, but Tottenham almost ruined those plans with their deadline-day offer.

Marc Guehi camp ‘surprised’ by £70m Tottenham offer
One of the positives of Newcastle’s quiet January window is that many of the club’s top targets will still be available in the summer.
Guehi falls into that category after Tottenham’s £70m Guehi bid was rejected by Palace.
Spurs were becoming desperate in the final hours of the window as they looked to add a centre-back to Ange Postecoglou’s squad after an injury crisis at the North London club.
Tottenham ended up signing Kevin Danso, but first they tried a mega-money offer for Guehi. Just as they did to Newcastle in the summer, Palace rejected.
According to The Athletic, Guehi’s own camp were “surprised” by Tottenham’s offer as they had no idea it was coming.
The report suggests Tottenham were “rushing around for options” before submitting an official offer for Guehi.
Marc Guehi’s price will drop for summer transfer window
Guehi staying put at Palace this month is great news for Newcastle, who can now weigh up a potential summer move.
Lloyd Kelly’s fee will fund a £70m signing this summer, and Guehi could be the ideal signing to add both quality and depth to Newcastle’s back line.
Newcastle remain interested in Guehi, and with Mitchell set to be handed a much bigger summer budget, a move could be back on.

Guehi’s contract is set to expire in 2026 meaning his value will continue to drop. Palace likely decided to reject Tottenham’s £70m offer on deadline day as there was not enough time to source a replacement.
A similar offer in the summer should be more than enough to get Guehi signed. If anything, Palace will have to drop their asking price considerably or risk losing him on a free transfer.
