Gary Lineker has called out Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer for his comments after the Carabao Cup final.
The Magpies ended a magnificent 70-year wait for a domestic trophy in March by beating Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.
Newcastle United celebrated their Carabao Cup win in style, with an open-top bus parading through the city before the players took to the stage on the Town Moor for another trophy lift and photo opportunity.
Following the event, Dan Burn admitted that no silverware will feel better for Newcastle. The Carabao Cup was the first time fans of multiple generations had seen them lift a trophy, so everyone wanted to be involved.
Alan Shearer was at Newcastle’s Town Moor event before the players arrived, and completely agreed with Burn’s statement on the feeling of Newcastle winning another trophy in the future. However, it was another claim that the Newcastle legend made that has raised Gary Lineker’s eyebrows.

While he was not in attendance, Lineker interacted with a Newcastle fan after the Town Moor event. The 64-year-old shared that one fan had not taken his black and white scarf off since the Carabao Cup win.
While the Magpies had been riding the wave of some brilliant form over the last month, it all came to an end on Saturday. Newcastle were beaten 4-1 by Aston Villa after winning their previous six games in all competitions.
Shearer admitted Villa were better than Newcastle after the game, but Lineker has called him out for comments he made after the cup win.
On the Rest is Football, Lineker said: “Alan, you told that if you win the Carabao Cup you wouldn’t care about any of the games left for the rest of the season. I know that’s already not the case.”
Shearer could only laugh, responding with: “Look, I’m laughing! At least I’m smiling!”

Fatigue seemed to catch up to the Magpies after playing three games in the last six days. After 60 minutes, it looked evident that Villa were going to run away with the game, and they did just that.
For a lot of this season, Eddie Howe has named an unchanged side in the Premier League. Assistant manager Jason Tindall has done exactly the same in Howe’s absence.
However, Tindall may look to change his starting XI following the defeat, even though Newcastle will have had a week to recover.

The topic of Newcastle’s starting XI came up on the Rest is Football, Shearer seemed to take the middle ground with his argument.
“Newcastle went in again with the same team,” he said.
“You’ve got a dilemma, haven’t you? If you change the winning team, then people say, ‘Well, why the hell are you changing the team?’ if you don’t change it then people say, ‘Well, you need to freshen it up.’
“But I think the quicker Newcastle forget about that and move on (the better).”
