Alan Shearer hopes that Newcastle United will be ‘lucky enough’ to win more trophies after lifting the Carabao Cup.

However, he has also made a bold prediction following Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup celebration.

Alan Shearer was part of the Toon celebrations on Saturday. The Newcastle United legend addressed supporters at the Town Moor, while Eddie Howe and his players were paraded through the streets of the city.

It was an incredible spectacle, as fans celebrated the end of Newcastle United’s trophy drought. It was a first trophy since 1969, and a first domestic trophy since 1955.

The wait for silverware made this celebration all the more special, and Alan Shearer has suggested on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast that this might be the ultimate high for the Toon Army – no matter how many more trophies the club wins.

“I said if I couldn’t win one [a trophy] myself then I had to be there as a fan,” he said.

“I was there a couple of weeks ago and I was there for the trophy parade.

“What I would say is that if Newcastle are lucky enough to go on and win other trophies, you know like Chelsea did or Man City did, if they go on, I cannot see it being as good as this one has been, you know, because just of all the excitement and how long it’s been and everything else and the parade and I mean everything, the match, the parade and everything, I just cannot see, if we are lucky enough to win another one, it being as good as this one.”

This Newcastle United team want more success

I think Shearer makes a good point. While winning more trophies will be absolutely incredible, the scenes and emotion that have surrounded this victory may never be repeated – unless it is another 70 years until the next domestic trophy!

But the hope is that more success will not be far away. After winning the 2025 Carabao Cup, Eddie Howe wants more trophies. That is the type of manager that he is, always striving for more.

As for the owners, they want more too. Following the final whistle at Wembley, Toon chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan insisted this was just the first trophy.

PIF want the lot. They want more Carabao Cups, while they also want Premier League and European success. Their hope will be that this victory is a launchpad towards more silverware.

They say that the first trophy is the hardest. That is what Kevin Keegan told his Newcastle players in the 90s. Unfortunately for them, that first trophy never arrived.

It has for Eddie Howe’s team, as the Newcastle United manager sets about proving Keegan right.
