This time last year, all Newcastle United fans could look forward to was Steve Bruce hopelessly trying to sign Hamza Choudhury.

The Leicester City midfielder was heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park, after the club had failed to complete a deal that January.

Choudhury was a target once again in the summer, and the outcome was the same. If anything, it was even bleaker.

The final summer of Mike Ashley’s tenure was a miserable one, with barely any money to spend on new players. Come deadline day and Bruce is desperately trying to sign at least one new player.

It looked like Choudhury was going to be that man. It was even reported that the deal was on.

Then it was off. Bruce was unable to sign Choudhury, simply because Newcastle couldn’t afford the loan fee Leicester wanted. Or they just didn’t want to pay it.

It was another embarrassing low for the Magpies, with people pleaser Bruce unable to sign the player he wanted with his charm offensive.

Bruce now wants to sign Choudhury for West Brom

Fast forward a year and everything has changed at Newcastle. Mike Ashley has been replaced by new and ambitious owners, while Steve Bruce’s job is now Eddie Howe’s and he’s doing brilliantly.

Newcastle are still struggling to sign players, but they’re in a different stratosphere to Choudhury.

But for Bruce, the only thing that has changed for him is the club. He’s now West Brom boss, despite suggesting he would never manage again after his Newcastle departure.

After flopping in the Championship last season, Bruce’s Baggies are looking to bounce back, and he wants some help from an old friend.

According to the Athletic, West Brom have enquired about signing Choudhury on loan. 12 months on and he is still trying to land the 24-year-old. Bruce must be desperate to work with him.

Is he even that good? Bruce thought signing him could transform Newcastle, but that never came to fruition. Instead, that role has gone to Bruno Guimaraes.

For Bruce’s sake, I hope he does sign Choudhury. This transfer pursuit has gone on for so long that it would be really interesting to see how Choudhury does in a Steve Bruce team.

However, if Bruce still can’t sign him, it might be time for the Foxes ace to get a restraining order.
