Transfer deadline day: Newcastle closing in on Hamza Choudhury loan

According to the Telegraph (10.13am), Newcastle are set to sign Hamza Choudury on loan from Leicester.

The midfielder will become Steve Bruce’s second signing of the summer, after Joe Willock returned to the club permanently.

The Telegraph add that while it is just a loan deal for Choudhury, he could become a permanent Magpie next summer. However, it is not clear if Newcastle actually do have an option to buy as part of the loan deal.

Regardless, this is great news on what looked set to be a dull deadline day for Newcastle.

After a grim start to the season, it is clear that Steve Bruce desperately needs reinforcements.

Choudhury will boost our midfield options, and hopefully give the defence a bit more protection.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to St James’ Park all summer, and nearly joined the club in January.

Now it looks like a deal is going to be done, but it might not be our only piece of business.

Newcastle still hoping for more than just Hamza Choudhury on loan

According to the Telegraph, Bruce still hopes to add a defender before this evening’s deadline.

His side have been exposed at the back time and time again already this season, and desperately need a new centre-back.

The report states that Bruce is trying to convince the Newcastle hierarchy to bring one more player in.

While the club will point at financial limitations, performances on the pitch should dictate that they need to bring someone in.

Choudhury will be a welcome arrival – even if he did cause Matt Ritchie to have a lengthy injury layoff in 2019.

The midfielder has scored one Premier League goal in his career – a stunner at St James’ Park back in January 2020. A goal like that in the black and white of Newcastle would quickly endear him to the Toon Army.
