Fabian Schar was recently rewarded with a new contract at Newcastle United for his fine work this season.
Despite being 34, the defender has been an integral member of Eddie Howe’s side this season, proving that age is just a number.
Fabian Schar has played in the majority of Newcastle United’s games in all competitions this season, even finding the back of the net on a few occasions. The Swiss defender is known for scoring rather spectacular goals, but nothing would have topped his effort from inside Newcastle’s own half, which crashed against the crossbar against Leicester City on Monday night.
Jacob Murphy joked with Schar on social media about his shot, claiming it was the “assist of the year.” but fans would have loved to have seen that effort find the back of the net to create another memorable moment in the club’s history.
Schar asked Murphy if he was offside for Newcastle’s goal, to which the winger replied that he “shouldn’t have been.”
The defender is set to play in Newcastle’s final eight games of the Premier League season as they continue their pursuit of Champions League football. Now, former Newcastle star Andy Carroll has aimed an incredibly brutal dig at Steve Bruce regarding Schar, to which the 34-year-old has responded.

Fabian Schar responds to Andy Carroll’s comment about Steve Bruce
It is fair to say that Bruce had his fair share of critics during his time at Newcastle. Results were less than adequate, and his style of play left fans feeling bored and uninspired at the best of times.
Bruce recently argued with Dwight Gayle after the former Toon striker revealed what it was really like to train under him at Newcastle.
In response to the comments, Bruce said Gayle was lying and blasted him on national radio. However, Bruce has come under fire once again, this time by Carroll, who was brought back to Newcastle by the former Toon boss in 2019.
On Schar’s Instagram post, Carroll commented: “And Brucey benched you,” with a hands clasped over eyes emoji. Schar simply responded with a zipped mouth emoji, suggesting that he and other Newcastle players who were managed by Bruce have the exact same feeling about him.
Newcastle fans praised Schar for his new contract, claiming his £3m price tag in 2018 was some of the best business the club has ever done.

Steve Bruce set for another season in League One with Blackpool
Bruce took the job at Blackpool in the early stages of the 2024/25 season, and for the most part, results have been positive.
Early signs suggested that Bruce’s Blackpool would be play-off contenders this season, but a recent drop-off in form has effectively taken them out of the running. The Seasiders are currently 10th in League One on 60 points and are eight points off sixth-placed Reading.
Bruce continues to be publicly embarrassed by his former colleagues, but he may be left even more red-faced if Blackpool do not finish in the top six.
Newcastle fans laughed at Bruce last September when comments in a post-match interview reminded them of what he used to say when he was managing the Premier League. Thankfully, fans can now watch on from afar with no worry of the 64-year-old coming back to haunt them.
