Fabian Schar has put pen to paper to extend his stay at Newcastle United until the end of the 2025/26 season.
The Switzerland international has been sensational this season and has been rewarded for his hard work.
Fabian Schar has been a big part of Newcastle United’s success this season, continuing to be a rock at the back while getting amongst the goals.
At 33, Schar is no longer a spring chicken, but he has proven to Eddie Howe that he still has what it takes to be a part of Newcastle’s first-team squad for another year.
Howe was desperate to give Schar a new deal, especially after he helped Newcastle win their first domestic trophy since 1955 by putting in a stellar defensive performance against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.
Schar also has versatility, something Howe is a big fan of. The natural centre-back can also play as a defensive midfielder, although Sandro Tonali’s spectacular season has meant that a change of position has not been required.
With Schar confirmed to be staying another year, fans have stormed over to social media to give their reaction to the announcement.

Schar has continued his sensational partnership with Dan Burn this season, and while the latter took the headlines for his heroics in the cup final, the Swiss defender was as good on the big stage.
Newcastle want to sign a centre-back this summer, with sporting director Paul Mitchell eager to lower the average age of the Magpies’ back line. Schar may play fewer games but will still be a key member of Howe’s squads.
The announcement was made on Thursday afternoon after Howe confirmed that Schar was incredibly close to confirming a new deal.
Newcastle fans have since made their feelings known about the decision on X.
“Congratulations Fabian. One of the best value for money signings in our club’s history!” said one Newcastle supporter, while another added: “Fantastic. Been such a key player for us the last few years. To think we signed him for £3m.”
This Newcastle fan pointed out Schar’s lengthy stay at the club after signing under Rafa Benitez in 2018: “Get in there! What a loyal player. Through thick and thin, he has been there for us. Congratulations.”
Another fan added: “Phenomenal! Still one of THE best bits of business we’ve done!

What Newcastle United staff said about Fabian Schar’s new contract
So far this season, Schar has played 33 games in all competitions, scoring four goals and keeping seven clean sheets.
There is no doubt in Newcastle fans’ minds that Schar will go down as a sensational piece of business and as one of the club’s greatest-ever defenders.
Reacting to the news, Howe told Newcastle’s official website: “Fabian has been outstanding in my time at the club. As well as his performances on the pitch, he has shown a fantastic attitude in the group.
“He has been the heartbeat of the club’s season so far, and he’ll continue to be a key player for us as we strive to finish as high in the table as possible.”
Mitchell added: “We are pleased to extend Fabian’s contract.
“He has played a significant role in the club’s growth in recent years and continues to have an important role to play on and off the pitch.
“We take a strategic view on sustaining and building the squad and will continue to work collaboratively to ensure our squad dynamic is optimised for success in the short and long term.”
