Fabian Schar almost scored a memorable goal during Newcastle United’s 3-0 win against Leicester City on Monday night.
The Magpies knew they were not at their best, but it was still more than enough to secure all three points and move up to fifth in the table.
It was a huge win in terms of the Champions League race. Newcastle United are now level on points with Chelsea in fourth, just four goals off levelling their goal difference.
Eddie Howe’s side barely needed to get out of first gear in the first half, scoring with their very first attack just two minutes into the game. The second half proved to be more competitive, but it looked as if complacency had creeped in towards full time. Harvey Barnes was cheered upon his Leicester return. There was no love lost between the two teams, however, with the winger scoring Newcastle’s third to kill the game off after just 35 minutes.
Fabian Schar’s effort from inside his own half would have been breathtaking had it not crashed off the crossbar. Thankfully, Jacob Murphy was there to finish the job and score his second of the night.
While the players were celebrating, cameras caught a brief interaction between Schar and Murphy, which Newcastle fans will find hilarious.

Fabian Schar’s question to Jacob Murphy after Newcastle goal
Murphy’s brace on Monday night meant the winger has scored four of his seven Premier League goals against the Foxes this season. The 30-year-old is enjoying his best season regarding attacking returns since joining Newcastle under Rafa Benitez in 2017 and has taken the role of Newcastle’s sole right-winger in his stride.
Murphy could have left Newcastle under Steve Bruce, but Howe put his faith in him and is reaping the benefits of the Newcastle manager’s training.
While the brace was impressive, he was perhaps fortunate to score his second after being first to the ball after it struck the bar before struggling to find his feet. Eventually, Murphy smashed it past Mads Hermansen, but Schar had other things on his mind.
In a clip captured by Sky Sports, Schar asks Murphy if he was offside for the rebound. Rather surprised at the question, Murphy replies, “No, I shouldn’t have been.”
The goal was checked by VAR, who confirmed the 30-year-old was indeed onside. Murphy was denied his opportunity at a hat-trick on Monday, with Howe taking him off with around 20 minutes to go for tactical reasons.

Fabian Schar nearly rounded off a memorable week for Newcastle
While Dan Burn stole the headlines for the week he had after his Wembley heroics in March. The last week will surely live in Schar’s memory.
Schar signed a new contract at Newcastle, keeping him on Tyneside until the end of next season. The Switzerland international also helped the Magpies to a 2-1 win against Brentford last Wednesday.
Scoring that effort from inside his own half would have been the icing on top of the cake in what has been a truly memorable week for Schar.
Newcastle want to sign a centre-back in the summer, so Schar’s position in the starting XI will be in jeopardy next season. However, he will still surely be utilised by Howe during European games, no matter what competition they qualify for at the end of the season.
Schar is known for scoring sensational goals for Newcastle. His strike against PSG in the Champions League is proof of that, but there could very well have been a new career highlight if that effort found the back of the net.
