Newcastle United have confirmed that Eddie Howe will not be in the dugout for the game against Manchester United due to illness.
The Toon boss was admitted to the hospital on Friday night after feeling unwell over the last few days. The club have confirmed that he is ‘conscious and talking’ and will continue receiving expert medical care.
Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will take over in Eddie Howe’s absence and will be supported by members of Newcastle United’s first team staff.
The Magpies are looking to make it five straight wins in all competitions against Manchester United on Sunday, but must do it without Howe on the touchline. It is just the second time the 47-year-old has missed a game for Newcastle, with the only other time being in his first game in charge – a 3-3 draw against Brentford.
Tindall took Newcastle’s pre-match press conference on Friday with Howe unwell, and was positive that Howe would be in the dugout for an important clash against their historic rivals.
While Howe may not be at St James’ Park when Newcastle face Man United on Sunday, Fabian Schar has made a simply unbelievable claim about his attention to detail.

Fabian Schar’s bizarre Eddie Howe admission at Newcastle United
Schar will be in line to start against Man United. The 33-year-old has been an integral part of the starting XI this season, only missing a handful of games due to suspension.
In April, it was announced that Schar had signed a new deal at Newcastle, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2025/26 season. The Switzerland international is still expected to be a key player in the squad next season, even if he has to make way for a new right-sided centre-back this summer.
Schar has undoubtedly been training hard this week, even in Howe’s absence. In a discussion with beIN Sports, Schar discussed what the week has been like without Howe at the training ground.
On whether Howe’s absence has changed preparations, Schar said: “Not really, no. We know he’s going to watch the training session back. The intensity is there. Everyone knows we have to work to win games, and we can’t let off anything. Training has been the same.”
The presenter then asked if Howe will still be working while he is ill, to which Schar said: “I guess so! They record all the sessions, so he’ll probably see some sort of training. We still have to do well and do our job for Sunday.”
Schar helped Newcastle win the Carabao Cup in March and is aiming to get the club back to the Champions League to round off a truly memorable season.

Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones under pressure to deliver for Newcastle United
Newcastle are in safe hands with Tindall and Jones; the former had a stint as head coach at Bournemouth, while the latter had a stint as manager following Steve Bruce’s departure.
Jones was criticised by Simon Jordan for taking the Newcastle job, claiming he was ‘part of the problem’.
Either way, the Gateshead-born coach was kept on by Howe and has been an integral part of their success alongside them.
While the pair will be well prepared for the game, there is no hiding that they are being thrown into the deep end against Man United, no matter how poor they have been this season.
A potential positive for Newcastle is that Ruben Amorim is overhauling his Man United starting XI for Sunday’s game, including dropping Andre Onana, who has played every Premier League game so far this season.
