Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe was linked with the England job the minute that Gareth Southgate stepped down.
The 46-year-old was viewed as the natural successor to Gareth Southgate at England after he called an end to his eight-year spell in charge of the Three Lions.
Southgate stepped down after England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, and attention immediately shifted to Eddie Howe, who has cemented his position as one of the best English managers around.
Howe is open to accepting the England job but the FA would have to pay £5m compensation to Newcastle in order to appoint him.
The links between Howe and England will continue until an official appointment is made, but it seems he is quickly tumbling down the pecking order.

England enter talks with manager candidate
According to Sky Sports, former Bayern Munich, Chelsea and PSG manager Thomas Tuchel is now in “pole position” to become the new England manager.
They claim representatives of the German coach have entered talks with the FA as they close in on making a managerial appointment.
Lee Carsley has taken interim charge of the Three Lions but appears to be uninterested in taking the role full-time.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has also been linked to the England job but he remains contracted to the Premier League champions until 2025.
Eddie Howe now likely to stay at Newcastle United
It appears the FA are focused on appointing either Tuchel or Pep Guardiola as the next England boss, which is music to the ears of Newcastle supporters.
The whispers around Howe’s England links have unsettled the club this season, but it seems the speculation around him leaving St James’ Park is now dwindling.

Newcastle’s owners always wanted to keep Howe and it seems his long-term project on Tyneside will continue.
Howe has been linked with Tottenham in a potential reunion with Amanda Staveley, but everything now points towards him staying at St James’ Park.
