Until England appoint a new manager, Newcastle United fans should expect links with a move for Eddie Howe.

Indeed, the Newcastle United manager has long been tipped as a potential successor to Gareth Southgate and noise ramped up again following Thursday’s defeat to Greece.

Lee Carsley is in interim charge of course but the manner of the reversal at Wembley may have raised doubts about his suitability, while he himself has expressed a desire to return to his role as coach of the England U21s.

Howe is believed to have admirers within the Football Association (FA), so is likely to be linked with the post until a new coach is appointed. That, sadly, is the nature of the beast and something Newcastle must deal with.

While there have been suggestions that he is keen to stay at St James’ Park, fresh reports offer another side of the story.

How Eddie Howe privately feels about Newcastle and England

According to The Daily Mail, Howe is privately open to taking the job but is happy at Newcastle and it remains to be seen if the FA would be willing to enter a negotiation over his contract.

It should be noted that the report also claims that Pep Guardiola is the dream target, while Carsley has not totally ruled himself out of the picture just yet.

Eddie Howe is in an interesting position at Newcastle

It’s certainly understandable that the allure of managing his country might appeal to Howe. It does not mean that he’s actively looking to leave Newcastle, merely that such an opportunity is obviously huge.

Still, and while the relationship with sporting director Paul Mitchell is now said to have improved, Howe is in an interesting position.

Should he feel unhappy on Tyneside, the interest from the FA could be used as leverage in any discussions with Newcastle.

That’s not to say Howe will use that but it’s certainly something to consider…
