In a perfect world for Newcastle United, Pep Guardiola will get the England job instead of Eddie Howe.
They are both candidates to succeed Gareth Southgate, as the FA ponder who to appoint as the next permanent England manager.
It had felt like Lee Carsley was nailed on to get the England job, but that suddenly feels less likely. This international break was not as successful as the last for Carsley, who does not sound fully convinced about the prospect of leading the Three Lions on a full time basis.
In recent days, Pep Guardiola has emerged as a contender. The Manchester City boss is out of contract at the end of the season, while Roy Keane has urged the FA to target Guardiola and go for the best.
That would be good news for Newcastle United. It would mean Eddie Howe remains at St James’ Park, while it would also mean Guardiola leaving Manchester City and them potentially getting weaker.
What Pep Guardiola could do next as England eye Man City manager and Eddie Howe

However, it remains to be seen if that scenario is likely.
According to the Telegraph, the most likely outcome for Guardiola is that he signs a new one-year contract with Manchester City to continue as their manager until 2026.
The Telegraph add that Eddie Howe is also on the FA’s shortlist, alongside Thomas Tuchel, Ange Postecoglou and Graham Potter.
However, they report that the next England manager will not be Lee Carsley, with the former Everton midfielder no longer being considered.
Newcastle will keep a close eye on Pep Guardiola’s decision
Given everything that he has achieved in the game, Guardiola has to be the FA’s top choice. He would be a remarkable appointment, and would give England fans real hope of triumphing at the World Cup in 2026.
However, the more probable scenario is that he continues at Manchester City for another year, which will likely result in another year of dominance.
It will also force the FA to find a new top target. Whether or not that would be Eddie Howe remains to be seen.
It was recently reported that Howe is happy as Newcastle United manager, after his representatives were informally approached by the FA. However, that stance could always change if a formal offers comes his way.
The wait continues to see who the FA appoint as Gareth Southgate’s successor. For Newcastle United fans, it remains a nervous wait.
