Eddie Howe makes ‘behind the scenes’ transfer claim ahead of a huge summer at Newcastle United

Newcastle United are set to embark on what could be a transformative summer transfer window.

The Magpies have seen very few players join the club in the last three transfer windows, but this summer could be one of the most important in the club’s history.

Eddie Howe has done an exceptional job in the circumstances this season. The Newcastle United manager has lost the likes of Elliot Anderson and Lloyd Kelly, which caused problems to the Magpies’ strength in depth.

Newcastle want to add quality in several positions this summer, including centre-back and on the wing to make up for ageing players and a lack of depth. Jacob Murphy’s exceptional form on the right wing means that position has been less of an issue, but there will naturally be concerns over whether he can keep his form up next season.

With Paul Mitchell set to be put to work in the next few months, Howe has provided an update on his personal involvement in summer plans.

The rumour mill has been spinning since the end of the January transfer window when Newcastle failed to bring any new players for the first team. Last summer saw Lewis Hall complete a permanent move to the Magpies, while William Osula and Odysseas Vlachodimos joined. However, those two players have not broken into Newcastle’s starting XI.

Speaking to the press ahead of Newcastle’s trip to Brighton on Sunday, Howe was asked about the upcoming transfer window.

“I think even though we haven’t signed a lot of players in the last few windows, the work has never stopped, and the work will never stop,” he said.

“That goes on behind the scenes relentlessly.

“Of course, I take more prominence towards the windows opening, so I’m doing a lot of work at the moment.”

The transfer window opens on June 10th, so supporters are just over a month away from potentially welcoming new players to the club.

It has already been confirmed that one player will be joining the Magpies this summer. Antonio Cordero rejected Real Madrid and Barcelona for Newcastle, showing that the Magpies are becoming a more attractive club for players from abroad.

Newcastle’s defence has been sensational this season, but it is getting older. The likes of Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are in their 30s and need to have replacements lined up for when they leave.

While Burn has Sven Botman as his likely replacement, Schar does not have a younger centre-back who can take his position once he departs.

Geordie Boot Boys were told that Newcastle are targeting Marc Guehi, who nearly joined the Magpies last summer.

Mitchell was confident of bringing Guehi to Newcastle, but the deal fell through after Crystal Palace rejected bids upwards of £70m to keep the 24-year-old at the club.

Palace are preparing for Guehi to leave the club this summer, with Newcastle ready to pounce.
