Newcastle United almost broke their transfer record last summer.
The Magpies did not make a major signing in 2024, but it was not for lack of trying.
Newcastle United wanted Marc Guehi, and were prepared to pay £70million for him. That would have made him Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever, but Palace wanted the Magpies to go to £75million.
Paul Mitchell said no, as Newcastle United walked away.
Now they could return in 2025, with Newcastle interested in Guehi again.

Newcastle United still want Marc Guehi
TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has spoken to Geordie Boot Boys about the Guehi situation, and it is now his understanding that Newcastle are still firmly in the conversation to sign the 24-year-old.
Bailey had said that Chelsea were the favourites for Guehi, but it is now his information that a move to St James’ Park cannot be ruled out.
“Newcastle are still very much in the picture for Marc Guehi,” he said.
“It is an option that is on the table for him and the club. Newcastle are not the only club in the picture. There is also the aspect of Steve Parish. The expectation is it will be a deal below £50million, possibly around £40million.
“Guehi is still a player who Newcastle really like. That is not really a surprise. We know he is a player who Eddie Howe wanted last summer. He’s got exactly the kind of attitude that Eddie Howe would want – thoroughly professional. He’s an England international who is coming into his prime. He is almost the perfect Eddie Howe signing.”
Who else is interested in signing Marc Guehi
Newcastle United are not alone in their pursuit of Guehi, with Bailey naming five other clubs who are keeping tabs on the England international.
“Newcastle are very much still in the mix. Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and Juventus are also keeping an eye on the situation,” he said.
“The expectation is that Crystal Palace will let him go, but Steve Parish is infamous for driving a hard bargain. It’s not going to be straightforward.
“But Guehi and his people do have that advantage of his contract situation, with his deal due to expire in 2026.”
How Marc Guehi felt about joining Newcastle United in 2024
12 months after missing out on Guehi, Newcastle United have another chance to secure his services.
Not only that, but he could also cost them around £30million less than what they were prepared to pay in 2024.
Bailey added: “We know Guehi was ready to move to Tyneside last summer. They were willing to pay £70million for him. But now £40million seems like a fair price.”
If Newcastle can agree a price with Crystal Palace, this deal might not be difficult to do. As Bailey says, Guehi was keen to come to St James’ Park 12 months ago, at a time when European football was not on offer.
But it will be next season, and there remains a strong chance that the Magpies could be competing in the Champions League.
