It is essential for Newcastle United to sign a winger this summer.
While Jacob Murphy is playing better than ever, Newcastle United remain desperately in need of more depth on the right of attack.
Newcastle have not suffered since selling Miguel Almiron, with Murphy excelling and establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous wide players.
However, this form will not last forever. Eddie Howe needs another option on that side of the pitch – especially with European football due to return to St James’ Park.
David Ornstein makes Jack Grealish suggestion
As it stands, it is unclear who Newcastle will aim to sign to play on the right wing. Tyler Dibling is attracting less interest, while Antoine Semenyo will be expensive.
While Eddie Howe’s top target is yet to be revealed, the Athletic’s David Ornstein has suggested a player who he thinks the Magpies should consider a move for.

During a Q&A for the Athletic, Ornstein discussed the future of Jack Grealish at Manchester City, hinting that he thinks Newcastle United could get the £100million man back to his best.
On Grealish, Ornstein wrote: “I could see a move – presumably on loan – but I’m not aware of takers emerging yet and the big question would be how his salary gets covered. This is not information, just me speculating… I’d be intrigued to see if a club like Newcastle could help bring him back to the level we know he possesses and they’re among the teams looking to strengthen in the wide attacking areas.”
Why Newcastle United will not sign Jack Grealish
Newcastle were linked with Grealish in January.
At the time, a move made no sense. Signing Grealish went against Newcastle’s recruitment policy.
Fast forward to the looming summer transfer window, and a Toon swoop for Grealish would be equally as surprising.
Whether it was a loan deal or a permanent switch, the main issue would be his wages. Grealish earns £300,000-a-week at Manchester City, which is around double what Newcastle’s highest earner brings home.
Another problem would be Grealish’s age. He is 29-year-old, and turns 30 in September.
While he is certainly not old and far from over the hill, Newcastle are in the market for a younger prospect. Paul Mitchell wants to reduce the average age of the squad, so signing Grealish would go against that mission.
If you ignore the finances required and Grealish’s age, Ornstein does make a good point.
We all know how talented Grealish is. He was untouchable at times for Aston Villa, and if there is one coach that can recapture that magic then it is Howe.
Capable of playing out wide or as an attacking midfielder, Grealish really would be a game-changer for the Magpies. However, there is simply no chance that Newcastle United would even consider rescuing the England international.
